Trusted Choice's Allstate Insurance Score

3 Stars

We award Allstate a final rating of 3 out of 5 stars. While Allstate has a superior rating from AM Best, the carrier is not accredited or rated by the Better Business Bureau (BBB). There have also been thousands of complaints filed against the carrier through the BBB in recent years. Allstate is one of the nation's largest insurance companies.

Allstate was founded in 1931 as part of Sears, Roebuck & Co. However, it has operated fully independently from Sears since 1995. While the carrier originally only sold car insurance, it has since greatly expanded its coverage catalog to include home insurance, motorcycle insurance, business insurance, life insurance, and much more.

Allstate is publicly traded and ranked on the Fortune 500 list. It recently acquired Esurance in order to keep pace with the changing insurance market.

We love that Allstate works with independent insurance agents to help make customers' experiences that much better. Offering 24/7 claims reporting is a nice feature, too. However, the higher-than-average car insurance rates and customer complaints are a legitimate cause for concern. Overall, we recommend looking into several options along with Allstate to be your next trusted carrier.

Allstate Insurance FAQs

Claims are processed 24/7 and can easily be filed online or via the Allstate app. However, flood insurance, life insurance, and annuity claims must be filed by phone. The carrier does not make a specific claims response time frame promise.

Allstate is highly available to its customers. In addition to 24/7 phone service, policyholders can also use the Allstate website. Customers can also use the mobile app to contact a representative. Allstate can also connect its customers with independent insurance agents to provide a more comprehensive customer service experience.

Allstate allows customers to file some claims online, while others must be filed by phone. The carrier breaks down its claims process into four easy steps:

  1. File the claim
  2. Damage inspection
  3. Begin repairs
  4. Receive payment

If customers have further questions about the claims process, they can contact the carrier directly or ask their independent insurance agent.

Allstate's website seems a bit dated, and navigation is less polished than many other modern carriers' sites. However, the carrier does offer modern customer service options such as online claims reporting and find-an-agent.

As far as social media, Allstate appears to only have a presence on X, which is very limited compared to most other insurance companies. Overall, Allstate falls a bit short in the user-friendliness department.

Allstate has an excellent financial strength rating from AM Best. However, the carrier is not currently rated or accredited by the BBB, and thousands of complaints have been filed against it in recent years. The insurance company also has much higher-than-average car insurance rates. So, it may be up to individual interpretation as to whether Allstate can be considered a good insurance company.

Allstate's coverage may be right for individuals or professionals seeking auto, home, business, or life insurance. Coverage is available nationwide, but some products may not be sold in every state.

Allstate offers the standard home insurance coverages including liability, dwelling, and contents. The carrier also has additional coverage options for natural flood protection, personal umbrella insurance, and  coverage for damage or theft of personal property while hosting one's home to others.
